Located at 9731 Silverthorn Road, McKean, PA, Lake Effect Equestrian Team is just 14 minutes south of the Millcreek Mall and conveniently accessible from Route 99. Whether a rider owns their horse or not, everyone is welcome. If you don’t own a horse, you can borrow one , allowing all students the opportunity to train and ride in an exceptional and supportive setting.

Training for All Levels of Riders

We offer training programs tailored to both beginner and advanced riders. For those just starting, weekly lessons provide a foundation in horsemanship and riding skills. For more experienced riders, the team competes in prestigious national events like the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA). Riders in grades 4 through 12 can compete at local and national levels, and even younger students can shadow and learn from older, more seasoned riders during competitions.

National-Level Equestrian Success

We have earned recognition at the national level. Our team consistently places in the top 3% of national riders, with several team members advancing to the National Finals—an impressive feat, as only 400 riders out of over 11,000 make it to this stage. Our program shapes strong competitors and helps students build lasting friendships and valuable life skills like responsibility and teamwork.

Experienced, Certified Trainers

Our trainers, Lindsay Filley and Lori Hermann, are USHJA-certified trainers with years of expertise in developing riders for success in the show ring. Lindsay also holds a USEF “r” judging license in Hunter and Hunter/Jumping Seat Equitation, ensuring our students receive guidance from a highly qualified professional.

Joining the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA)

Joining our IEA team provides the perfect opportunity for riders looking to take their skills to the next level. Competing in the IEA allows riders to experience the excitement of competition without the need to own or lease a horse, as they ride horses assigned at the competition. It’s an affordable way for students to gain experience and build their equestrian résumé, especially if they aspire to ride in college.

The IEA season typically runs from September to January, with advanced competitions continuing through April. Riders must compete in five shows, often combined into weekend events, giving them multiple opportunities to showcase their skills.

Mission Statement

The goal for our team athletes is for the team experience to help them increase their skills, knowledge, and ability to work within a team atmosphere while creating a social support system for a sport that is otherwise very individual. Our fundamental goal is to provide a fun opportunity for our team members that introduces them to participating in a national competition program and builds friendships. For those interested in riding in college, we work to train our athletes to prepare them for a competitive collegiate experience.

Our lessons focus on the fundamentals of riding and establishing strong horsemanship skills. In order to become strong riders, students must first understand the horse, how they think, how they move, and what care they require. Students are taught to safely handle the horse, proper grooming techniques, care and maintenance of tack, and the unique characteristics of the horse. It is the mastery of this basic knowledge, combined with safe riding practices, which creates a true “horseperson.”

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned competitor, Lake Effect Equestrian Team is the place to grow, compete, and thrive in equestrian sports. Get in touch with us today for more details.
